Who can attend TexPrep-Lubbock?
TexPREP takes applications from students finishing their 6th, 7th or 8th grade years from the South Plains Area who are high achievers and interested in learning about engineering, mathematics, and science professions. Minorities and female students are especially encouraged to apply.
When is PREP held?
The program is held for six and a half weeks during June and July of every year.
The tentative dates for the 2025 program are May 27th – July 11th, 8:00 a.m. — 2:00 p.m., Monday - Friday.
Where is PREP held?
All program functions, except for field trips, will be held in classrooms and laboratories on the Texas Tech University main Lubbock campus.
How much does it cost to attend PREP?
It is free! TexPREP charges no tuition to attend. The staff of TexPREP works hard each year to write proposals for grants to fund the program. This enables students from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds to attend without any financial barriers. However, students are responsible for their providing their own transportation to and from campus and for bringing or buying their own lunch. We do ask for $10 from each student to pay for t-shirts, Tech ID cards, and pizza and recreation on the last day. If for some reason you cannot afford the $10 please let our office know.

What will I do?
Teaching methods include discovery learning, problem solving, and cooperative learning. The students learn to solve problems, think logically and critically, conjecture, and apply mathematical knowledge. They develop abilities in abstract reasoning and systematic analysis. They apply mathematics to engineering, science, and computer science, and discover a wide range of career opportunities. Students learn to reason mathematically and to communicate their results. Who will teach the classes?
College professors, scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and premier teachers serve as instructors for PREP. College students serve as mentors and tutors.
How can I apply?
- Obtain permission from your parents/guardians
- Complete the entire Application
- Write a 100-200 word essay on why you wish to attend TexPREP
- Submit a copy of your latest report card and test scores
- Obtain recommendations from a math teacher and from a science teacher, English teacher, or counselor
(These are included with the application) - Attend a formal interview in May
