Texas Tech University

2021 Conference of Texas Statisticians
Poster Presentation

Since the conference is virtual and presenters will not be able to stand by their posters, this year's poster session will blend both traditional posters and a SPEED presentation to advertise each presenter's poster.  The SPEED presentations will be played during the conference before the allotted time for viewing the posters.

As is traditional for COTS, the poster session will include a Student Poster Competition that is open to all students working on statistical research at an academic institution in Texas.  This includes undergraduates as well as masters and doctoral students.  The student poster competition is being generously funded by Horn Professor Jay Conover.

All other registered attendees either living in Texas or employed by an institution/company in the state are also welcome to submit a poster and SPEED preview for inclusion in the conference.  Posters due October 4th.

Poster Requirements:

  • For consistency, all posters must be submitted in a 36 inch by 48 inch format as a pdf document.
  • Since presenters cannot stand next to their posters, the e-mail address for the presenter of the poster must be prominently displayed on the poster so that attendees may contact the presenter with questions.

  • SPEED Presentation requirements and tips:

  • The presentation must be 3 minutes or shorter in length.

  • The presentation must be recorded and uploaded as a video to Youtube.  The video must include your name in the title of the video on Youtube to identify the presenter.

  • Don't try to cram too much information into your presentation.  Think of it as an advertisement for your poster.  Simply try to hit the biggest points to draw attendees to your poster.

  • Here are two websites that provide some tips for giving 5-minute presentations.  You can adjust their guidelines for the shorter time limit:
  • Here are two pdfs and a website describing the similar concept of a 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) presentation.  One key difference here is that your audience is still a group of statisticians, not a general audience, but many of these tips could still be helpful for you.

  • Extended Deadline: All posters and SPEED presentation videos must be submitted by 5:00 PM Central Time on Monday, October 4.

Submission Instructions: To submit your poster and SPEED presentation information, you will need to send an e-mail to Fangyuan.Zhang@ttu.edu.  The e-mail must contain the following information:

Email subject line  —  COTS 2021 poster: presenter's full name

    The email content includes:

    1. Title
    2. List of all authors
    3. Participating in the student poster competition?  Yes or No
    4. The web link to your SPEED presentation video on YouTube

    Attach one file:

          1. A pdf of the poster file with the title of the file: presenter_full_name.pdf  *

          * Note:  file must be in the format ... presenter_full_name.pdf
