For those of you who were absent today due to the Engineering Fair,
here is a summary of what we covered today:
- Reminder of the exam on Friday. On previous years' exams on
these topics I tended to have about 8 or 9 problems. You do not need
scantrons or bluebooks.
- I have office hours today from 1:00 to 2:00 and on Thursday
from 11:00 to 1:00 if you have any questions.
- I reminded everyone to read the rest of the examples in the
exponentials and logs section of the book. I only covered an
exponential growth example in class, but you are also responsible for
knowing the other examples such as continuously compounding interest,
etc.
- I started derivatives today. I talked about the slope of secant lines
between two points on a graph, the slope of the tangent line at a
point on a graph. I defined the derivative and showed some common
notation for the derivative. We also had a theorem giving a formula
for the equation of a tangent line to a function at a point x.
This was all material from section 3.1 in
the textbook.
- On Monday, I will finish off the 3.1 material then move on to
techniques of differentiation (sections 3.2 and 3.3).
- I assume that you are reading the book anyway, but if you
missed today, be sure to read section 3.1 carefully.
9/21/2010 Here are some
sample problems and topics to review
for the exam on Friday. Try these out and bring questions to your discussion
sections on Thursday.
I will have my usual office hours on Wednesday (1:00 to 2:00) and
extended hours on Thursday (11:00 to 1:00)
Recall that the exam covers all of chapter 1 and sections 2.1, 2.2,
and 2.3 from chapter 2.
