This summary and tutorial from the University of Florida describes many basic tools, functions, and procedures in MATLAB.
Here is an additional tutorial. It presents the material in a somewhat different format that the first one, so it may be helpful if you want a different perspective on some of the concepts.

Beyond SuMAc

If you like MATLAB and want to continue using it after the camp is over, you can purchase the student version of MATLAB through it's parent company MathWorks for $99. A list of Frequently Asked Questions about obtaining the student version can be found here. The student version includes all of the built-in functions we used during the camp, including those in the Image Processing Toolbox.
As an alternative to MATLAB, a number of groups have put together FREE "clones" of it that work very similarly. Much of the syntax is even the same! Here is a website that lists four of the most common FREE alternatives to MATLAB, information about them, and links to download the software. I have not used any of them, so I don't know whether any have built-in image processing tools, but I have heard good reviews of Octave and Scilab from colleagues. From what I can see, Scilab may be the most suitable if you should ever want to make use of the software in the classroom.
