Career Panel


The panel will be moderated by Dr. Delores Ludwig. The participants will be:

Dr. Raegan Higgins
Dr. Raegan Higgins is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Before joining the faculty at TTU, Raegan attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she earned her doctorate in 2008. During her time here, she has published 5 research papers in the area of time-scale calculus and mentored several students. This year she began teaching graduate courses and advising graduate students. Raegan has been married almost four years to Dr. Kamau Oginga Siwatu, an educational psychologist, and they have an active 18-month old daughter named Jalia.

Dr. Jane Winer
Dr. Jane Winer was Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for 17 of the 35 years she worked here at Texas Tech University. Before becoming Dean, she taught in the Department of Psychology and published research in several areas including how people make career decisions. Twenty-five students completed their doctoral dissertations under her supervision, and she served on another 103 doctoral dissertation committees. She has been married for 32 years to Dr. Monty Strauss, a mathematician, and both retired from Texas Tech at the end of May 2010. They name their pets after mathematicians.

Emily Powell
Emily graduated from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 2011. She now works in a chemistry research lab synthesizing compounds that can carry an electric current. These compounds have practical use as a means of collecting solar energy and also as cleaving DNA at specific locations. She plans to start graduate school at Texas Tech this fall to get a Master of Science in Chemistry. She previously worked in a microbiology lab at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center doing research to develop gene cancer therapies. She also has interests outside of laboratory work! She enjoys cycling, swimming, weight lifting, salsa dancing, and kayaking.

Kimberly Shipley
Kimberly Shipley is the Program Coordinator for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Outreach. She grew up in Beaumont, TX and lived there until 2006 when she first came to Texas Tech. Kimberly graduated from Texas Tech in December 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and in December 2010 with a Masters in Business Administration. She is currently working on her Masters of Science in Management Information Systems and should graduate by December 2013. During her time at Tech Kimberly was involved in many campus organizations including the Honors College, the Mathematics Association of America, Phi Beta Kappa, Kappa Mu Epsilon, Raider Sisters for Christ, and other social organizations. She also fell in love with the friendly, inviting atmosphere of Texas Tech and is excited to be able to work here full time spreading her love of STEM disciplines.
