The aim of the talk is to describe recent work on the large data dynamics for the wave map equation in the energy critical 2+1 dimensional case. Precisely, the main result is to establish a dichotomy between global existence and scattering, on one hand, and soliton-like concentration, on the other hand. This is joint work with Jacob Sterbenz.
