4/17/2011: A new webwork is posted. Due Friday 4/22 by
11:59p.m.
4/13/2011: I posted solutions to HW05 below. Solutions to
all homeworks and quizzes are now available.
Also, if you were in class today, here is where I went wrong on the
concavity example. For f''(x) > 0, for example, we needed -6(12x+1)>0.
When I simplified by dividing through by -6, I forgot to flip the
inequality. (Multiplying by a negative number reverses the
inequality!) So I should have gotten concave up when x < -1/12 and
concave down when x > -1/12, which fits with the sketch of graph we
got at the end.
4/13/2011: I have posted solutions to the rest of the
quizzes and to HW06. (HW05 coming soon.) Webwork answers are available
on webwork.
Recall that my remaining office hours this week are Wednesday 10:30 to
11:30 and another afternoon session on Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30.
4/7/2011: Here are some sample
review problems
for exam 3. (removed 5/26/2011)
Tuesday's discussion sessions will be exam review. There is no quiz.
I will also do a review in class Wednesday (and time permitting,
part of Monday).
4/5/2011: The WW10 I emailed about is posted below. It is
due next Monday, 4/11/2011.
There is no written assignment next week
so you can study for Exam 3,
which is on Friday 4/15/2011 in class.
Exam 3 is on chapter 4 material.
3/30/2011: The WW09 I emailed about and the new written
assignment are posted below.
The webwork is due by Monday 4/4 at 11:59
p.m., and the written assignment is due in discussion section on
Tuesday 4/5. Since the discussions happen throughout the day, to be
fair, I will consider your homework on time as long as it is turned
in before the end of the last (5:00) discussion section. If you have
an earlier discussion and want to turn it in closer to 5:00, please
either put it under my door (math 224) or in my mailbox in the math
office (math 201).
There will be a quiz in discussion next Tuesday on material from 4.5
and 4.6.
3/22/2011: The next written homework assignment is posted
below. It is due Monday 3/28/2011 in class.
Next week's quiz (Tuesday) will be over materian from 4.1 to 4.4.
3/21/2011: The next webwork assignment is available on the
webwork system. Due
Sunday 3/27/2011 by 11:59 p.m.
There is written assignment coming (tomorrow) that will be due Monday
3/28 in class.
I will return Exam 2 in class on Wednesday. Note that
Wednesday is also the final drop deadline. If you are at all concerned
about your current grade, be sure to come on Wednesday so you'll get
your exam back. If you need your score sooner, please email me and
I'll send it to you.
3/9/2011: I have posted solutions below to the rest of the
written homework and quiz03. I recommend studying those solutions in
your exam studying.
Also, on problem 5 of the review problems, it was meant to ask you for
dy/dx not dx/dy.
3/7/2011: As I mentioned in class, you have through Tuesday
this week to turn in homework 4. Also, in addition to reviewing in
discussions this week, I will spend Wednesday's lecture reviewing for
exam 3.
3/5/2011: Here are some sample
review problems
for exam 2. (removed 5/26/2011)
I am not planning to post solutions to these, but your TA
will go over them in discussion sections on Tuesday. The Tuesday
discussion sections will be review for the exam. Please try problems
and ask your TA to go over any that you are stuck on. You can also
bring questions to me in office hours (or by email anytime).
In addition to my regular office hours (Monday and Wednesday, 10:30 to
11:30) this coming week, I will have extra office hours on Thursday,
3/10/2011, from 10:30 to 12:00.
3/3/2011: I will have office hours Friday from 10:30 to
11:30. I will have some extra office hours next week as well (TBA)
because of the exam coming up.
Exam 2 will be next
Friday, 3/11/2011, in class. It covers chapter 3.
2/28/2011: There is new homework posted below. The new
webwork assignment (WW07) is due by 11:59 p.m. Sunday night 3/6/2011.
The new written assignment is due in class Monday 3/7/2011.
Don't forget Exam 2 coming up in class on
Friday 3/11/2011. It will be over chapter 3.
2/27/2011: Office hours this week: due to covering a class
for a colleague, my office hours this week will be Monday 10-11 and by
appointment. Please email me if you would like to meet sometime other
than on Monday.
2/24/2011: I postponed the WW06 deadline to space the
assignments out a little better. WW06 is due Sunday night. The written
assignment is still due Monday in class.
There is a quiz this Tuesday, 3/1, in your discussion section over 3.1
through 3.6 material.
I am returning to regular lectures Friday. I will post solutions to
the rest of the exam 1 problems.
2/21/2011: The next written homework, HW03, is posted
below. Don't forgot the webwork due Tuesday and Friday.
2/21/2011: The next webwork is posted. It is due this
Friday by 11:59 p.m.. There will also be a written homework due next
Monday, 2/28/2011. The written one will be posted tonight.
There is no quiz this week. Exam 1 will be returned during discussion
sections this week.
2/18/2011: The next webwork is posted. It is due by 11:50
p.m. Tuesday.
2/14/2011: Reminder: I have extra office hours for Exam 1:
Tuesday 12:30 to 2:00. And, of course, don't forget the exam in class
on Wednesday this week.
2/13/2011: I corrected the figure for y = (1/2)^x on page 5
of the lecture slides for 2/2/2011. (You may need to clear your cache to see
the correcte version.)
I have also posted solutions to the previous quizzes and
written homeworks. (The webwork answers are available on the webwork
system shortly after each assignment due date.) There is a link below
for the quiz solutions. The homework solutions are posted in the
homework assignment table below.
2/11/2011: Here are some
review problems for exam 1 (removed 5/26/2011).
Please try these. Your TA will be reviewing for the exam on Tuesday in
the discussions. I will also hold some extra office hours Monday or
Tuesday (TBA).
2/3/2011:
Based on the quantity and kind of questions I am getting about the
webwork and homework, I think we need to take a breath and regroup
after the snow day issues this week since your discussion sections and
my office hours were canceled.
Here is the new plan:
WW03 is due this Friday by 11:59 p.m., as I said in my previous
email
The written HW02 is now due Monday, 2/7, in class
I am postponing the quiz. Instead of the quiz in class tomorrow
(Friday), it will be during your regular discussion section on Tuesday
next week. It will cover all chapter 2 material.
Tomorrow (Friday), in class, instead of the quiz, I will finish the
2.4 material on exponentials, then do some review examples and answer
homework questions (this is to make up for the missed discussion
sections and office hours this week). I STRONGLY suggest you make it
to class on Friday especially if you are having any difficulties with
the homework.
As a consequence of the previous changes,
Exam 1 is postponed until Wednesday, 2/16.
If you have a serious conflict with the new date,
contact me ASAP for other arrangements.
The "catch" is that I will keep exam 2 where it was originally
scheduled, so you may not have as much of a homework break during the
exam week as I would normally give, and there are only about 3 weeks
between the two exams. Exam 2 is scheduled for the Friday before
Spring break (3/11), and I do not intend to postpone it. That would
put us too far behind.
I will summarize the schedule in class tomorrow. Please let me know
if you have any questions on the schedule.
Please come tomorrow with your homework questions and topics for
which you would like to see a review or more examples.
1/30/2011: The next webwork, WW03, is available now and due
Thursday 2/3 by 11:59 p.m.. The next written homework, HW02, is posted
below and is due in class Friday 2/4.
1/21/2011:
I've added lecture notes.
Your 2nd webwork assignment, WW02, is available. It is due

class on Wednesday, 1/26/2011. Be sure to read the written homework
rules in the syllabus (linked above). These rules will be enforced.
I will have office hours next week Monday and Wednesday from
10:00 to 11:00
1/18/2011: Added lecture notes for Wednesday.
1/14/2011: I have posted the lecture notes for Wednesday
