11/8/2011: Don't forget tomorrow's (Wednesday) quiz in
discussion section. The quiz is over sections 3.7 and 3.8.
I have posted chapter 4 homework problems in the homework section.
Exam 4 is coming up on 11/22. It should cover 3.7 through 4.5.
11/1/2011: I have posted solutions for quizzes 5, 6, and
7 below. (I will also post solutions to the written part of exam 2
and to the retest shortly, but the quiz solutions should be helpful
for studying for Thursday's exam.)
As a reminder, there is no quiz in the discussion sections this
week. Your TAs will be doing exam review for Thursday's exam.
Don't forget to bring your scantron for the multiple choice
portion of the exam.
10/28/2011: Recall that Exam 3
is coming up on Thursday, 11/3/2011 . It will cover
chapter 3 sections 3.1 through 3.6. (We will put 3.7 and 3.8 on Exam
4.)
There is no quiz next week. Discussion sections will be review for
Exam 3. Change to my office hours: I am changing my Friday office
hours to be from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00. My Tuesday office hours will
remain the same (11:00 to 12:15).
10/26/2011: Many of you participated in surveys by Dr.
Erin Hardin a few weeks ago in discussion on attitudes about math
and science. She has a follow-up survey
for anyone who might be willing to spend a few minutes on it. If you
could take a few minutes to complete the survey at
this
link, Dr. Hardin and I would greatly appreciate it.
(She does not share any
personal information or specific responses with me. I may get
general information from the surveys in aggregate; any information
that I get is anonymous.)
10/21/2011:
As announced in class, we will have a
"re-test" of the written part of exam 2 in class on Tuesday 10/25.
It will be 3 written problems of similar difficulty
to the ones on the original exam. They may be over any chapter 2
material.
The re-test is optional and cannot hurt your grade. If you
choose to take the re-test, I will average your new score with your
score on the written part of the original exam. If the average
is better than your original score, it will replace the original score.
If you either choose not to take it, or have a bad day and your
average is lower than your original score, your exam 2 grade will not
change.
We also still have the regular quiz during discussions next
Wednesday. Quiz 7 will cover sections 3.5 and 3.6.
The recommended homework problems have been updated.
I have gotten a number of requests for tutor information. The
math department keeps a list of tutoring resources, including people
who are available to be paid one-on-one tutors,
at this link.
Also, a number of students have been asking about current
grades. I have submitted midterm grades. If you are a student who gets a
midterm grade (Freshman and student athletes), you should be able to
see your midterm grade from your eraider account shortly. If you do not
get a midterm grade, feel free to email me and I can let you know.
In calculating your current grade, I have included the 5 quizzes that
have been graded and dropped your lowest one (as I will do in
determining your final grade as well). I used the average of your first
two exam grades as an estimate for your in-class and final exam
grades.
10/17/2011:
I have posted solutions to the multiple choice
part of exam 2 below (in the exam and quiz solutions section). I am not
posting the written problem solutions yet. We'll talk about that in class
Tuesday.
I have also updated the recommended homework with 3.4 problems.
This week's quiz will be on section 3.4
10/8/2011: Don't forget that Quiz 5
will be on Wednesday
10/12/2011 right after we get back from the Fall
break. It will be on sections 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3.
The recommended homework for Chapter 3 is posted in the
homework section.
10/1/2011: Remember that exam 2
will be this Thursday, 10/6/2011.
Exam 2 covers Chapter 2 (limits, continuity, exponentials, and
logarithms) in the textbook.
The exam is in-class and has the same format as the previous
exam: multiple choice and some written response.
Don't forget to bring
your scantron and number 2 pencil for the multiple choice portion.
In the suggested homework, I accidentally skipped the problems
on the Intermediate Value Theorem. Be sure to look at these problems
for the exam: 2.3 problems 27, 29, 31.
I will post the solutions from the most recent two quizzes
later this weekend.
10/1/2011: Grading on Exam 1: there were several
mistakes in questions on exam 1. One problem had more than one correct
answer among the choices, another was coded wrong in the solution
sheet. The multiple choice questions counted 2 points each. Because of
the mistakes, I am adding 4 points to everyone's exam 1 grade. To see
your correct grade, add 4 points to your raw score (out of 64 points).
9/25/2011: I have posted exam 1 solutions below. They
have been added to the quiz solution section.
9/20/2011: Because of the engineering job fair on 9/21,
discussion sections for this Wednesday are canceled.
Quiz 3 will be given in class on Thursday, 9/22 . It will
cover sections 2.1 and 2.2.
I returned Exam 1 (and quiz 2) today in class. I will post the
answers shortly so you can compare. The exam was out of 64 points,
with 40 points for the multiple choice (2 points each) and 24 points for
the written response questions (8 points each). The bonus problem was
worth up to 4 points.
9/9/2011:
I have posted solutions to quiz 1 and quiz 2 below. Note that there
are four different versions of each quiz. In generally, version A was
given in 8:00 a.m. discussions, version B in 3:00, version C in 4:00,
and version D in 5:00 discussions.
Don't forget that exam 1 is this Tuesday, 9/13,
in class. It
covers chapter 1. You need to bring a scantron form (orange) and
number 2 pencil with you to the exam. You should have nothing
written on your scantron when you arrive, other than possibly your
R-number and your name. (You will need to provide your R number on the
exam.)
9/1/2011: Next week's quiz will cover material from the
rest of chapter 1. See the recommended homework problems.
There are lots of problems since I'm assuming that this is review.
But I recommend that you start them early.
8/29/2011: I have room and TA information for your
discussion sections. Some of these were not in the systems until just
now. If you need your room and TA, here they are:
