Recitation sessions (01/22/2008 - 05/09/2008):

Overview: A one-semester tour of differential and integral calculus in one variable, and differential calculus in two variables. Does not involve any trigonometry. Emphasis on formulas and their interpretation and use in applications. 4 credits. 3 lectures. 2 recitations per week.

Prerequisite: 3 1/2 years high school math or grade of at least C- in [1031 or 1051].

Text: Calculus for Business, Economics, and Social and Life Sciences, 9th Edition, by Hoffman and Bradley.

Grading and examination policies: Homework will be assigned and collected weekly on Wednesdays at the end of lectures. They will count for 15% of the grade. There will be quizzes given every week on Tuesdays in recitations and count for 10%. There will be three midterm exams in recitation sessions during the semester and a final exam. Each midterm exam will count for 15% of the grade, the final exam for 30% of the grade. Students are expected to turn in all homework problems. The lowest homework score and the lowest quiz score will be dropped. No make-up quizzes are given. The exams are closed-book. No make-up exams unless legitimate documents for excuses are presented to the instructor in advance.

Calculators: Only scientific calculators are allowed in exams and quizzes. These calculators can calculate the values of the standard algebraic, trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions. Graphing calculators and calculators that can do symbolic manipulations are not allowed.

Examination Schedule:

Class schedule and Homework assignments: Listed and updated on the course website.

Student conduct: Students are required to have scholastic honesty and respect for others. We will follow university policy on student conduct (http://www1.umn.edu/regents/policies/academic/Student_Conduct_Code.pdf).

Tutoring:

Advice: Come to class regularly, work on homework problems, write the solutions clearly. Ask questions in class and get help from the instructor or TAs during their office hours. Master the material quickly and do not wait too late until the midterms or final exam. Students are encouraged to give feedbacks to the instructor during the semester using the form posted online (http://www.math.umn.edu/~lthoang/M1142-Spr08/mid-eval.pdf).
