In Memoriam

Rodica Gelca

Dr. Rodica Gelca received her Ph.D. in Environmental Toxicology from Texas Tech University in 2009 (an effort begun in 2005). She was born in Transylvania (Romania), and was a dual citizen of the United States of America and Romania.

She worked as a postdoctoral associate between 2010-2013, and as a research assistant professor for the Institute of Environmental and Human Health at Texas Tech University. Her research mentor was Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, whom she very much admired as a role model.

Dr. Rodica Gelca also worked as an Instructor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Texas Tech since 2016. She taught a variety of courses, including Business Statistics and Calculus. Rodica is survived by her husband, Dr. Razvan Gelca, a Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, who was also a victim of the tragic event that took place on March 27.

Rodica was a wonderful teacher, loved and appreciated by students, as well as a great colleague. She was a hardworking teacher and researcher with a positive, optimistic and nurturing personality. She will be greatly missed!
