| Razvan Gelca , Leader of the USA Mathematics Competition Team, just got back from the Romanian Masters of Mathematics competition held last week in Bucharest. Teams from 12 countries took part in this extremely challenging competition (Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Ukraine, UK, USA). The US team is selected based on the test scores at previous year's training program for the International Mathematical Olympiad. Each team is joined by 2 professors, one who is The Leader and one who is the Deputy Leader. The two take part in the grading of the papers. The Leader is also involved in the discussion of the problems that are given, and of the grading scheme. It is the second year that I served as the Leader of the US team for this competition. I am their coach during the Math Olympiad Summer Program, which I have been doing every year since 1997 (with a break between 2003 and 2005). The six members of the US team won one gold medal (Victor Wang) and 5 bronze medals (Joshua Birkensiek, Mark Sellke, Thomas Swayze, James Tao, and Dai Yang). |
